After persuading Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg to transfer to Tottenham, Christian Eriksen might assist Manchester United in their efforts to sign Hojbjerg.
The Red Devils have been linked with a late move for the former Southampton and Bayern Munich midfielder. Sofyan Amrabat and Ryan Gravenberch have also been mooted as possible additions to United’s midfield options before the transfer window closes.
But perhaps the more practical choice is Hojbjerg. According to reports, United are mulling a bid for him, and Spurs, his present club, are willing to offload him before the transfer window shuts due to earlier interest from Atletico Madrid of Spain.
The 28-year-old would team up with fellow countryman Eriksen if he relocated to Old Trafford. Hojbjerg said that the playmaker was a major factor in his transfer from Southampton to Spurs in 2020, despite the fact that the two have never played together for a club.
He was quoted as saying: “I called Christian [Eriksen] and had a discussion. There were a few things I wanted to know more about. That was a really good thing. My desire to go to Tottenham was strengthened by my conversation with Christian.
Hojbjerg has now made 147 appearances for Spurs, but he is currently out of favor. Ange Postecoglou, the current manager, has only allowed him to make two substitute appearances.
During Hojbjerg’s time in North London, Eriksen has been on the move a fair amount. He had departed Spurs for Inter Milan before his countryman’s arrival.
His time at the Serie A club was cruelly cut short after the cardiac arrest he suffered at Euro 2020. Eriksen was handed his first opportunity back in football with Brentford before he signed for Manchester United last summer.
He has already been joined by another of his compatriots this summer with the Red Devils sealing the signing of striker Rasmus Hojlund from Atalanta. They paid £72m for his services but are still awaiting his debut as he recovers from a back issue.
Eriksen said: “I know it’s been a massive, massive thing and still is [having Danes at Old Trafford]” after being joined by his international teammate. Obviously, when he makes his debut, the situation will blow up even more. I’m glad to see another Dane at United who can fly the flag of his country.
Hojbjerg might be ready for a return to familiar surroundings this weekend if he teams up with his Danish teammates. To play Arsenal, a ferocious adversary of Spurs, Man United travels to North London.
